Timing Belt
One of the most overlooked maintenance item is the timing belt. The bad part is, it’s not getting any cheaper to repair your engine when the belt breaks. We recently saw a 1.8 turbo head that bent all 20 valves when the belt broke! The valve and lifters along cost $1,214. This might not have sounded too bad if the cams hadn’t been ruined, too. Another thing to consider: all the 4-cylinder engines now drive the water pump with the timing belt. A seized water pump would break the timing belt, so always replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt.
